GETTING HERE

BY CAR

You can choose from a variety of ferry ports and the Eurotunnel, but two examples are set out below;

a) Crossing to Dunkerque/Calais, then traveling either via Rouen and Le Mans, to Tours and down. The distance is roughly 800km (500 miles) and is a 7 ½  to 8 hour journey depending on speed and traffic.

b) Crossing to Caen (Ouistreham), then to Le Mans and Tours; The distance is roughly 560km (350 miles), and is a 5 ½ hour journey.

If you’re looking for a stop en route we can recommend www.leretour.fr, a chambres d’hotes with a guaranteed warm welcome and beautiful enclosed garden, which is five minutes from Blois and just off sortie 17 of the A10 autoroute. From there you can follow the Loire river to Tours, perhaps visiting some chateaux along the way.

From Poitiers (N10)

1. Just south of Poitiers take the Angouleme exit onto the N10.
2. 50 minutes or so later take the last Angouleme « sortie » off the N10 = Angouleme sud.
3. This is signposted Libourne and Hopital.
4. As you come off the slip road get in the left hand lane and take the last exit off the roundabout, then the first exit off the next roundabout.
5. 200 metres to the Hopital roundabout. Your exit is directly ahead, still following Libourne signs, under railway bridge.
6. Up hill and round bends to next roundabout, first exit, for Libourne. Stay in right hand lane on the dual carriageway.
7. At the final roundabout take the first exit (Libourne/Montmoreau), going down the hill on the D674.
8. Follow this road all the way to Chalais.
9. As you approach Chalais move into the slip road for a left turn (Attention! Speed camera), signposted Chalais est/centre ville.
10. Follow this road into the centre and at the “Fountain” square turn left (Libourne/Perigeux) into the main street.

From Barbezieux (N10)

1. If you come off the N10 at Barbezieux you will pick up signs for Chalais straight away. It is a straight, fast road to Chalais and takes 20 minutes.
2. As you enter Chalais you will approach a roundabout and should take the second exit, sign posted centre ville. Follow this to the “Fountain” square and turn right into the main street.

From Angouleme train station

1. Facing out from station turn left.
2. At the first roundabout turn right, first exit, signposted Libourne.
3. 50 metres on at second roundabout turn right again, signposted Libourne/Bordeaux.
4. Through tunnel and up hill (attention! speed camera on return).
5. At next roundabout straight over, first exit.
6. 100 metres later at next roundabout, last exit, left, to Libourne.
7. Get into right hand lane of dual carriageway.
8. At the next roundabout take the first exit (Libourne/Montmoreau), going down the hill on the D674; this will take you all the way to Chalais.

From Chalais to Le Petit Roc

1. Follow mainstreet to end and down into the railway underpass.
2. At the end of the underpass you are immediately onto a roundabout. Take the second exit, straight ahead, for Aubeterre; but fork right immediately for St.Aulaye/Les Essards. (If you miss the fork continue on the Aubeterre road for 1 km and take the next right, signposted Bazac.)
3. Follow this road up past cemetery and through bend to crossroads; turn right for St.Avit/Bazac. (1.5km from roundabout to crossroads).

From Bordeaux airport

1. From the airport follow the signs for Paris, which will take you around the rocade and onto the A10 north (10 mins).
2. After another 10 mins you will come off the A10 by following signs for Angouleme onto the N10.
3. Stay on the N10 for 20 minutes and take the Monyguyon exit, at Montlieu la Garde.
4. Follow signs for Montguyon.
5. As you bypass Montguyon turn left, following signs for Chalais.
6. c.2kms out of Montguyon, at the bottom of the hill, turn left for Martron.
7. In Martron, turn right for Chalais.
8. Follow this road for ten minutes to a T junction. Turn left and you will pass Chalais airfield and descend into Chalais.
9. Turn right at junction, then second exit off roundabout for centre ville.
10. Follow the road into the centre, to the “Fountain” square.
11. Turn right into the main street

BY TRAIN

This is the quickest method of travel; The Eurostar from Saint Pancras to Lille takes about 2’40” for the outward journey. Change platforms in Lille for the TGV which will arrive in Angouleme 3’30” minutes later. From Angouleme station to Le Petit Roc is a forty five minute journey by car. You can catch a train to Chalais station but connections are limited. For the return I have taken the local train from Chalais at 6.50 a.m. to Angouleme, the TGV from Angouleme c.8.15 arriving Paris10.40, an hour to cross Paris to the Eurostar at Gare du Nord, and arrived in St. Pancras at 13.15. To obtain reasonably priced tickets it is necessary to book the full three months in advance.
